Wax Poetics Features New Single from Brooklyn's People's Champs

People's Champs are a Brooklyn-based septet that combines dance rhythms from West Africa and South America with retro-futurist synth tones, crafting them into indie songs with Stevie Wonder-esque lyrics. Think: Equal parts Sharon Jones, tUnE-yArDs, Os Mutantes, William Onyeabor, and Prince.

The band will be releasing their debut album later this year, and today the first official single makes its debut through Wax Poetics!

Fun fact: Members of the People's Champs are also in The Superpower Horns -- ie the horn section that wrote and recorded numerous horn arrangements for Beyoncé, including "Party" and "Love on Top."

Hostages starts small, but sneakily unravels into something really huge.
