For Immediate Release: April 14, 2016
22 year old Chicago-based musician Francis Shannon is obsessed with the concept of a mixtape, where multiple works and genres can exist as one purposeful entity. Under the solo moniker of Hollowtapes, Shannon has taken that fascination and brought it the studio for his latest release. Tall is a four song EP of disparate yet accessible music, with each recording covering a fresh style and specific influence near to Shannon’s heart. A garage punk track can follow a Beatlesque pop nugget or a softly delivered confessional fits neatly before atmospheric shoegaze bluster. In the world of Hollowtapes, anything is possible.
“Broken Car Radio” is Tall’s most urgent track featuring mostly improvised vocals and a lo-fi stomp that leaves an impression from the initial listen. Recorded in one take using an old telephone as a microphone, the track etches out the crude events surrounding a late night car crash and the driver’s resignation to her fate. Flipping between an icy yet gorgeous melody and furious pedal-driven bluster, “Broken Car Radio” recalls the dynamic sentiment of early Deerhunter and the overdriven clamor found in Krautrock compositions.
"... a simple, direct lo-fi track with an epic scope."
"... ambitious and sonically dense"
